Video Series from Million Stories: Your Brain on Money
Always on the lookout for videos about behavioral economics, I discovered this treasure trove from the Singleton Foundation.
The six videos in this series, which each run about 5 1/2 minutes, cover topics such as consumerism, shopping, investing and saving:
- The Foolproof Cure for Shopaholics
- Can Shopping Really Make You Happier?
- The Secret Science Behind Saving Money for Retirement
- Playing Games Could Make You Rich — Science Proves It
- Break Free From the Unconscious, Science-Backed Influence of Brands
- Can Monkeys Help You Conquer the Stock Market? See the Science Behind Money
Great opportunity for a jigsaw activity where students form groups of 6. Each watches a different video and then shares the following with other members of their group:
- How science explains our specific behaviors
- Tips on how to overcome what may be our natural tendencies or biases
- Key terms and definitions covered in the video.

About the Author
Tim Ranzetta
Tim's saving habits started at seven when a neighbor with a broken hip gave him a dog walking job. Her recovery, which took almost a year, resulted in Tim getting to know the bank tellers quite well (and accumulating a savings account balance of over $300!). His recent entrepreneurial adventures have included driving a shredding truck, analyzing executive compensation packages for Fortune 500 companies and helping families make better college financing decisions. After volunteering in 2010 to create and teach a personal finance program at Eastside College Prep in East Palo Alto, Tim saw firsthand the impact of an engaging and activity-based curriculum, which inspired him to start a new non-profit, Next Gen Personal Finance.
