In this episode of the NGPF Speaker Series, Intuit co-founder Tom Proulx takes us back to 1983, when a chance encounter outside Stanford's engineering library sparked  the company behind household names like Quicken, QuickBooks, and TurboTax. Tom's story is a masterclass in customer-centered thinking. Rather than building what they thought users wanted, Proulx and co-founder Scott Cook called real homeowners and asked what single improvement would matter most. The answer: save people time on tedious tasks like writing checks and balancing registers.

That discipline of listening before building is something Proulx believes any entrepreneur must embrace. "Deeply understand your customer and the improvement they want," he says. 

When asked the number one trait for entrepreneurial success, Proulx says, "Perseverance. You have to keep going. When you hit a wall, find a way around it, then do it again and again."

From navigating venture capital rejections to pioneering the direct-sales model that saved the company, Proulx's journey is full of stories around resilience, customer research, and smart product design.
